SIGHT BEYOND EYES: ICT AND CAREER SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED IN GHANA 1st November , 2025

The Naa oo Naa Foundation’s  commitment to empowering vulnerable groups, has held the maiden edition of its ‘Sight Beyond Eyes ICT and career support programme for visually impaired persons in Ghana.

The initiative, held at Ghana National College, combined ICT training, mentorship and career guidance while also donating laptops and learning materials to support the academic journey of visually impaired students

The initiative seeks to promote inclusion, highlight powerful disability success stories, and support Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across educational institutions. It also aims to demonstrate that disability is not inability and that equal opportunity is essential for national progress.

The programme was organised in partnership with the Pan-African Professional Alliance at Pennsylvania State University (USA) and Franco Trading Enterprise..

Speaking at the event, a visually impaired lawyer and lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Mr Carruthers Tetteh, recalled enjoying full vision as a child until losing his sight at age eleven.

The sudden change, according to him, forced him to leave the  regular school for a specialised institution, but he refused to surrender his dreams.

Mr. Tetteh who also sits on the Foundation’s Board and heads its Persons with Special Needs Unit said through resilience and hard work, he excelled from secondary school all the way to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) where he graduated with First Class Honours in Law.

Today, he is a practising lawyer and the first visually impaired person to lecture in Law in Ghana. He encouraged the participants never to allow disability or circumstance to limit their aspirations adding that “with the right mindset, support and determination, one can rise above any challenge,” and, urging the students to recognise the power within them.

The programme’s career segment featured  Ms. Sabina Sabia Bolsong Young, a private legal practitioner, and Mr. Frank Boakye Yiadom, APR, Corporate Communications expert at UCC.

They guided students through career options, academic planning and strategies for achieving excellence at the tertiary level and encouraged them to identify their strengths early, seek mentorship, and take advantage of support systems available to them.

Project Manager of the foundation, Mr Fredrick Quaicoe, explained that the project is designed to equip visually impaired students with practical ICT skills, prepare them for higher education and better position them for the job market. He appealed for more financial and logistical support from state institutions, organisations and individuals to expand the initiative for other inclusive school and areas in Ghana.

Joining virtually from the USA, Dr. Dzigbordi L. Dzakpa, a Lawyer and Researcher at Pennsylvania State University, spoke on the topic, “the critical role of digital literacy in enhancing independence and inclusion”, and stated that digital competence was no longer optionalbit rather essential for social and economic participation. Additionally, Dr. Francis Wiredu, a Clinical Optometrist at Healthy Eyes Eyecare & Optical Centre, delivered a session on proper eye care management.
The Foundation’s Director of Communications and Public Relations Ms Catherine Antwi Boasiako underscored inclusive empowerment as a pillar of national development. She encouraged all stakeholders to incorporate disability inclusion at every stage of planning, decision-making and implementation so that no Ghanaian is left behind.
